Project Overview

This feature is a powerful addition designed for solar farm construction sites, later adapted for various use cases, including mining sites.

This innovative tool serves as an identification and aerial mapping solution, providing site managers with real-time insights into the construction progress.

Through successful implementation, our clients have experienced significant benefits, including the early detection of progress gaps among contractors, resulting in substantial time and cost savings.

Months of dedicated design work, in close collaboration with customers and extensive user research, have contributed to the development of this transformative feature.

For a deeper understanding of the design process, I welcome further discussions.

Background

In the construction process of solar farms, multiple layers and components are installed throughout the project.
The critical responsibility of construction managers on-site is to monitor the construction pace and ensure that contractors adhere to the agreed-upon plans and timelines.

However, due to the sheer dimensions and complexity of the projects, accurately and frequently assessing the rate of progress has been a challenge for construction managers.

Construction progress insights

To address this issue, we embarked on developing the "Count Measurement Feature."
This innovative tool allows drones to automatically map construction sites every working day, identifying and classifying the newly added components.
Each counted component receives a distinct visual representation on the map, resulting in an updated map with new layers and numerical progress information relative to the last point on the timeline.

The "Count Measurement Feature" provides construction managers with real-time insights to track progress efficiently and make data-driven decisions.

The Challenge

Developing a counting tool for site and project managers for both manual and AI-based mapping was a primary challenge.

We aimed to create a new measurement visual language enabling real-time assessment and advanced quantitative analysis of project progress and trends across different time points.

Product Requirements

Comprehensive Mapping and Analysis - User Capabilities:

  • Dual Mapping: Enable site administrators to manually map and count newly added parts on a recent aerial photograph. Additionally, enable the view of automatic mapping and counting by the AI algorithm.
  • Versatile Counting Tools: Classify different types of construction parts into three counting tools - point, line, and area marking.
  • Data Analysis: Provide functionality to analyze the data through a dashboard and counters, export reports, and support a progress comparison against the construction plans.

Insights and Outcomes

User-Centered Design Drives Success: The development of the Count Measurement Feature was grounded in a user-centered design process. Months of dedicated design work, extensive user research, and close collaboration with customers, including an insightful interview with a construction project manager, contributed to the feature's transformative success.

Client Satisfaction and Empowerment: Feedback from construction project managers highlights the positive impact of the Count Measurement Feature. Users now have real-time control over the construction progress, reducing dependency on contractor reports. The feature empowers them to verify progress, tackle delays, and ensure accuracy, resulting in substantial time and cost savings.

Efficient Progress Monitoring: By providing an intuitive and easy-to-use interface, the Count Measurement Feature seamlessly integrates into construction managers' daily routines. The ability to compare contractor reports with the visualized measurements on AIM allows for early detection of discrepancies, streamlining payment verification, and milestone completion.

Visual Representation for Accuracy: The Count Measurement Feature comprises three count tools - unit, line, and area - each providing visual confirmation of count values on the map. Construction managers rely on this comprehensive visual representation to accurately assess progress across diverse aspects of the project. The ability to compare count data with on-site progress enhances data accuracy and boosts confidence in Percepto's data reliability.
