Project Overview

This project centers on the transformation of the drone testing process at the local factory.

By introducing a comprehensive walkthrough system, we aimed to elevate the validity and quality tests for each new drone. The ultimate goal was to prevent operational malfunctions and optimize the repair and return processes.

Through careful iteration and collaboration with testing workers, we successfully improved testing efficiency leading to a significant positive impact on the overall production quality.

For a deeper understanding of the design process,
I welcome further discussions.

Background

The drones went into manufacturing in an outsourced factory.
Each new drone undergoes validity and quality tests before packing.
However, the current manual testing process was overly complex and resulted in an increased number of operational malfunctions in drones.
These malfunctions could have been prevented if detected properly.

The Challenge

Our objective was to enhance inspection precision and optimize the testing process, empowering the testers to promptly detect and address problems on the spot.

Through this redesign, we aimed to prevent operational issues and eliminate the need to send drones back to the factory for repairs.

Product Requirements

  • Implement a comprehensive walkthrough system to guide testers
  • Provide step-by-step instructions and visual explanations for each test
  • Integrate GIF animations for improved understanding of specific tests
  • Create an accurate report for every malfunction detected during the tests
  • KPI - Impact and Results:
    • Reduction in Drone Returns for Repairs: Decrease the number of new drones sent back for repairs by 20%.
    • Improved Defect Detection: Increase the number of defects detected by testers using the new test system by approximately 30%.

User-Centered Design Process

Interviews & Observations

To ensure the success of the ATP, a meticulous user-centered design process was adopted. The first step involved conducting comprehensive interview and observation sessions with the test engineers at the manufacturing site.
This allowed us to gain invaluable insights into their specific needs, pain points, and workflow challenges.

Data Collection

During the interviews and observations, we asked targeted questions about the existing testing process and the testers' requirements for a more efficient and effective system. We also observed them performing the tests in real-time, providing deeper understanding of their interactions and pain points.

Understanding User Needs

Through this data collection process, we were able to understand the intricacies of the testing engineers' daily tasks and identify opportunities for improvement. This knowledge served as the foundation for our design and ideation process.

Usability Testing and Validation

⚙️ Usability Testing

Before the final launch, we conducted usability testing at the manufacturing site with the prototype and the testing engineers. This critical step allowed us to assess the effectiveness and usability of the design in a real-world setting.

📝 Positive Feedback and Satisfaction

During the usability testing, the testing engineers expressed high satisfaction with the new test system. They found the comprehensive walkthrough system, step-by-step instructions, and visual explanations to be intuitive and easy to follow. The inclusion of GIF animations also received positive feedback, enhancing their understanding of specific tests.

🛠 Minimal Iterations Required

The positive response from the testing engineers during usability testing validated the success of the user-centered design process.
By addressing their specific needs and requirements early on, we minimized the need for major design iterations during this phase.

Insights and Outcomes

Enhanced Testing Efficiency

The ATP System significantly improved testing efficiency for each new drone. Testers could promptly detect and address issues on the spot, preventing operational malfunctions and optimizing the repair and return processes.

Reduction in Drone Returns for Repairs

By empowering testers to accurately detect issues during the testing process, the number of new drones sent back for repairs decreased, resulting in considerable time and cost savings.

Improved Defect Detection

The system's step-by-step instructions and visual explanations led to enhanced inspection precision, resulting in a substantial increase in the number of defects detected during testing. This early detection contributed to improved drone performance and overall product quality.

Validation of User-Centered Design

The successful reception of the ATP System during usability testing validated the effectiveness of the insights gathered from the user-centered design process. The alignment of the design with the testing engineers' needs resulted in high satisfaction and usability.
